For the entrepreneurs: COMPANY

April 12, 2002: First Day Matinee Show: Watched at Mitra Cinema, Kolkata

Director: Ramgopal Varma

Cast: Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, Manisha Koirala, Antara Mali, Seema Biswas, Mohan Lal.

I was really wondering, how come a film focussing on Mumbai underworld be titled as "Company"... little did I know which company it was hinting at?

The movie starts with Ajay Devgan's voiceover, "fayda toh koi bhi chahta hai... aise... waise... ya chahe jaise...." and the intent comes clear... a company of different type..
What I really loved about the movie is the character of Malik, played by Ajay Devgan, and his business acumen. Following are the scenes that managers must follow deeply:
1. When Malik is recruiting Chandu and his boys, a keen eye for the right talent and skills to negotiate. Not only does he entrust him with responsibility, but also gives him a free hand to make his own decisions.
2. When Malik gets Chandu released from police and the events follow, when he says, "Aise ladke roz.. roz.. thode hi milte hain.. hum nahin rakhenge to koi aur rakh lega.. aur agar aapko lagta hai ki usne kuch uncha neecha bola hai toh uski taraf se main maafi mangta hoon... maaf kardo.." and then he shoots Saeed and Anees at point blank range. He tells Chandu, "Uske gharwalon se zyada, mujhe apne ladkon ki fikar hai". Another high that marks a successful manager... to defend the small mistakes by a capable subordinate and see to the welfare of his juniors before other subjects...
3. When Malik kills Sharma and takes up the command of entire Mumbai underworld in his hands and utilises the timing to establish contacts with politicians, industy and celebrities.., .... a lesson for being go-getter... never miss the right opportunity... be bold enough to face the consequences.
4. When Malik escapes to Hong Kong and remote handles the whole Mumbai underworld.. is a classic example of how one can sense a threat and convert it to a seemless opportunity.
5. When he delegates the authority to Chandu and focussses on the bigger picture is also a good example of a sharp insight.
6. When he punishes Warsi, a very important lesson in Discipline.... something that is a must in any organization.
7. When he goes out of his way to uproot and kill Chandu, is another example.. one should not allow a subordinate to become a competitor... a person who knows your trade secrets is just as capable as Vibhishan...

I am sure, the idea will have people in favour and against it.. Please give in your valuable feedback.
